All prices are approximate as at July 2026, per official brand and retailer sites (Makro, Mr Price Home, American Tourister SA, Cellini SA). Prices in South Africa change often with in-store specials, so treat these as a guide and check current pricing before you buy. If you're flying in from the UAE for the summer break, chances are South Africa is either the destination or a stopover before Australia or New Zealand — and chances are you're coming home with more than you left with. Between the shopping, the gifts, the wine, and everything else that somehow finds its way into a suitcase, a lot of travellers end up needing an extra bag while they're already in South Africa, rather than paying UAE luggage prices before they even leave.

That's the brief for this list: suitcases that are cheap enough to buy on a whim, easy enough for one person to wheel through OR Tambo or Cape Town International without a fight, bright enough to spot the second they hit the carousel, and locked down properly so nothing goes missing in transit. Here are ten worth knowing about, all available from South African retailers.

What to look for before you buy

  • Easy handling. Four wheels (a "spinner") beat two every time — you can push the case beside you instead of dragging it, which matters a lot with a trolley full of extra bags. Check the weight of the empty case too: anything under about 3.5kg for a cabin size or 4.5kg for a check-in size leaves you more room under the airline's weight limit for what you actually pack.

  • Visibility. Most luggage on any carousel is black, navy, or grey. A suitcase in red, teal, yellow, or a bold print is genuinely faster to spot, and it's harder for someone to "accidentally" pick up by mistake. If you'd rather keep it neutral, a bright luggage strap or tag does the same job.

  • Safety locks. Look for a built-in combination lock with the small red Travel Sentry diamond logo — that's what makes it a "TSA lock." Airport security in most countries (South Africa, the UAE, Australia, and New Zealand included) can open these with a master key to inspect the bag and lock it again, rather than cutting your lock off. A suitcase without one can still be opened and re-secured with a cable tie or a standalone TSA padlock, but built-in is one less thing to lose.

The 10 picks

1. Marco BAG145E-20 Cabin Spinner (20")

≈ R599 · roughly AED 130 — Makro

The cheapest genuinely useful option on this list. A 20-inch four-wheel cabin case, light enough to check as a personal item or gate-check without stressing about weight fees. Good as a spare "shopping bag" case rather than your main piece.

2. Mr Price Home Hardcover Suitcase (Medium)

≈ R700 · roughly AED 155 — Mr Price Home

Mr Price Home has stores in pretty much every shopping centre in South Africa, so this is the one to grab in person if you land needing a suitcase the same day, without waiting on delivery.

3. Marco BAG167Dh-24 Cabin/Check-In Spinner (24")

≈ R899 · roughly AED 195 — Makro

A step up in size from the 20-inch version, still four-wheel and lightweight. Reviewers note it's noticeably lighter than competitors at this price, which is worth something if you're already close to Emirates' or flydubai's checked baggage limit.

4. Marco Jetsetter Check-In (28")

≈ R1,069 · roughly AED 235 — Makro

Large check-in size for the trip home when the extras have piled up — think rooibos, biltong, wine, clothing. This is the size most UAE travellers end up buying specifically to bring purchases back.

5. Marco Trunk Check-In (24")

≈ R1,369 · roughly AED 300 — Makro

A sturdier, trunk-style hard shell if you want something with more structure for fragile purchases (ceramics, ornaments, that bottle of Amarula you promised your neighbour).

6. Cellini entry range

≈ R649–R1,849 · roughly AED 140–405 — Cellini stores, Wayfare Culture, Gopals

Cellini is a long-standing South African luggage brand with a real local retail and repair network, which matters if a wheel or zip gives out mid-trip — you can walk into a store rather than deal with an overseas warranty claim. Their entry-level range spans cabin to check-in sizes.

7. American Tourister Sea Seeker Spinner (55cm, cabin)

≈ R2,099 (often on sale from R2,999) · roughly AED 460 — American Tourister SA / The Luggage Company

Cabin-legal size with a built-in TSA combination lock, four spinner wheels, and the backing of a globally recognised brand — useful if something needs replacing while you're travelling between SA, the UAE, Australia, or NZ, since American Tourister has a presence in all four markets.

8. American Tourister Sea Seeker Spinner (68cm, check-in)

≈ R2,519 (often on sale from R3,599) · roughly AED 555 — American Tourister SA

The check-in sibling to #7 — same lightweight build and TSA lock, sized for a full family shop. Buying the cabin and check-in pair together is a common move for UAE travellers restocking for the trip home.

9. American Tourister Lock 'n' Roll Cabin Spinner

Similarly priced to the Sea Seeker cabin case — American Tourister SA

Built specifically around the lock-and-handling brief: integrated TSA lock plus a double-wheel design that lets you slide a second bag on top and roll both at once — handy through a busy airport with kids or extra hand luggage in tow.

10. American Tourister Airconic Spinner (55cm)

≈ R2,999 · roughly AED 660 — American Tourister SA

The priciest case on this list, but still budget territory next to premium hard-shell brands (which run R5,000+ in South Africa). Tougher shell, TSA lock included, and the kind of case that'll outlast a few more summer breaks rather than needing replacing next year.

A few buying tips

  • Buy in South Africa if you're stocking up. Prices on mid-range luggage here are generally lower than UAE retail, so it's often cheaper to land with one case and buy a second locally for the return leg, rather than checking two from Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

  • Check your airline's baggage allowance before you buy the size. Emirates, flydubai, and South African Airways all have slightly different checked-baggage weight limits, and it changes by fare class — it's worth confirming before you pick a 24-inch versus a 28-inch case, since an oversized empty case eats into your weight allowance before you've packed anything.

  • Makro and Cape Union Mart have stores in most major SA cities (Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria), so if you're travelling within South Africa before flying home, you can pick a case up close to wherever you're staying rather than relying on delivery timelines.

  • Keep the receipt if you're buying to check-in on departure. South African customs occasionally ask about new, unused items being taken out of the country in bulk — a receipt keeps that conversation short.
