How to wear relaxed tailoring and still look polished

A blazer can have room through the body and still sit beautifully on your shoulders. Trousers can feel comfortable when you sit down and still fall in a clean line. Relaxed tailoring works when you pay attention to where an outfit needs shape and where it can afford a little ease.

At the Paris Spring/Summer 2027 shows on 5–6 October, Chanel introduced stretch “smocked tweed”, while Louis Vuitton showed soft tailoring and gauzy layers. Both offered ideas for clothes that give the body more freedom to move. You can take that thought into your wardrobe now, without waiting for the new season or investing in a designer suit.

At StyleSchool, our Quiet Luxury approach puts thoughtful fit, fabric and styling at the centre of an outfit. For relaxed tailoring, that means choosing a little definition that suits your silhouette, then allowing the rest to move comfortably.

Start with a blazer that has some shape

Try a softly structured blazer over a fitted T-shirt or fine knit, with straight trousers. The closer-fitting layer gives the eye a clear line beneath the jacket, while the trousers keep the overall shape simple. Fitted should still feel comfortable, with no pulling across the bust or waist.

If your silhouette is sharp and straight, look for a clear shoulder line, a defined lapel and fabric with enough body to hold its shape. A softer straight silhouette may suit gentler shoulders and a blazer that drapes without collapsing. Neither requires a tight jacket.

Check the length on your own body. A hem that stops at the widest part of your hips may draw attention there; a slightly shorter or longer version could create a line you prefer. If you want waist definition, try subtle shaping through the jacket or wear it open over a top tucked at a comfortable point.

Colour makes this combination personal. A Warm Autumn might try an olive blazer, a warm ivory top and chocolate trousers. A Cool Summer could use smoky blue, soft white and cool grey. If stronger contrast suits you, a dark blazer over a noticeably lighter top can give the outfit a crisp focal point.

Give fluid trousers a neat partner

Woman wearing wide leg pants with a flat waistband and a soft blouse.

Fluid trousers bring movement into an outfit, but the waistband and seat still need to fit. The fabric should fall freely over the hips, with pleats resting smoothly rather than pulling open. Try them with a neat shirt, leaving enough room through the upper body to breathe and move.

A full tuck can show the waist and make the leg line look longer. A partial tuck gives a smaller suggestion of shape, especially when the shirt is light enough to sit neatly. If either creates bulk or draws attention somewhere you’d rather keep simple, leave the shirt untucked and try a shorter hem or side slits. A tuck is an option, not a requirement.

For an angular silhouette, choose fluid trousers with a clean crease and a shirt with a defined collar. If softer lines suit you, consider a gently draped blouse and trousers with a less pronounced crease. Petite wearers may find moderate volume easier to balance, particularly with a shirt that doesn’t extend too far down the body.

Keep your colouring in view. Soft Autumn readers could combine muted olive trousers with a warm cream shirt. Bright Winter readers might prefer clear navy with white, adding a small touch of bright pink. Choose the contrast that belongs to you; relaxed clothing doesn’t have to mean a muted palette.

Let a matching set do some of the work

A comfortable matching set gives you a ready-made colour connection between the top and bottom. Try a softly tailored jacket and trousers, or a woven shirt and trouser set, finished with simple jewellery and well-kept shoes.

Woman in floral tropical jumpsuit and sunglasses walks on a seaside terrace, holding a woven clutch, with ocean and mountains behind.

Look at the whole silhouette before adding accessories. If both pieces are generous, rolling a sleeve or opening the neckline may give the outfit enough definition. If you prefer a visible waist, choose a shaped top, a suitable tuck or a belt that sits comfortably. You don’t need to use all three.

Let the details echo your lines. A structured bag and a geometric earring can support an angular silhouette. A softly shaped bag and rounded jewellery may sit more comfortably with softer features. Choose shoes with enough visual weight to balance the trouser width, then check the hem with that particular pair.

The set’s colour matters because it covers a large area and sits close to your face. Warm camel may work for some warm palettes; a cool palette might be better served by blue-grey or navy. Quiet Luxury leaves plenty of room for colour. A shade that suits you can make a simple outfit feel complete.

Try it in motion

Before buying anything, put together one of these combinations from clothes you already own. Start with the piece you feel good in, then adjust its partner. Perhaps your wide trousers need a shorter shirt, or your loose blazer works better over a closer-fitting top.

Woman in a bright green suit and yellow top sits in a chic boutique, adjusting her jacket, with mirrored reflections and leopard loafers.

Then sit, walk and raise your arms. Does the jacket settle back into place? Can you sit without the waistband digging in? Do the trouser hems clear the floor? Check the shoulders, hem lengths and proportions again once you’ve moved.

Pay attention to fabric, too. A soft fabric still needs enough substance to fall well. If it clings, twists or loses its shape quickly, styling can only do so much. Press out unwanted creases, check for pilling and clean your shoes.

The outfit should feel comfortable enough to get on with your day. If you’re constantly pulling at the jacket or rearranging the tuck, try another combination. Polished clothes earn their place by working when you move.
